What is a Sump Pump?

A sump pump is a pump that sits either in or under your basement (depending on the kind) inside a sump (pit). It pumps water out and away to a designated area. Serious water damage is one of the most destructive things that can happen to your house, and if you live in an area where flooding is common, you live with that nightmare all the time.

What type of sump pump should I get?

Pedestal Sump Pumps

A pedestal pump is older technology but is also the cheaper option! They take up space since they sit above the surface and are also louder, but are easier to access for maintenance.

Submersible Sump Pumps

These pumps sit underneath your basement (which means they are easily hidden) and are also quieter than pedestal pumps.

They tend to be a higher quality option, though the jury is out on whether or not they last as long as a pedestal pump.

Backup Sump Pumps

Battery-Operated

A battery backup is a great addition to your pump that doesn’t run on electricity and is activated by a floating switch (which will sense when the water is rising).

Water-Operated

A water backup pump runs on water rather than electricity or batteries. It does increase your water bill, though, and isn’t legal in every city so be sure to check before purchasing one!
